Cairns - tourism destination

Cairns is said to be one of the safest tropical destinations in the world, and is a wonderful environment for study.  It is a fast-growing, yet small and friendly city with tourists arriving every day from all over Australia, and from all over the world.

The tourism and hospitality industries provide a range of facilities and activities to meet the needs of tourists.  International students find little difficulty finding part-time work within these industries, and a variety of positions are usually available.  Employers rely on international students to help fill job vacancies - and being able to speak other languages is a definite advantage.

Accommodation

TNQ TAFE is able to arrange homestay accommodation to suit the needs of individual students.  Share accommodation can also be arranged, and is often within walking distance of the Cairns campus.

Students will find that the cost of living in Cairns is generally much less than living in a capital city.

Welcome to Cairns

Cairns has a population of over 130,000 residents and is an international tourist destination offering a rich cultural and cosmopolitan lifestyle usually only available in capital cities.

Located within the tropics and on the north-eastern seaboard of Australia, the city is surrounded by picturesque hills and the World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef and tropical rainforests.  Many attractions are within a 1-hour drive of the city.

Cairns is a multicultural city with well-established Asian, European, South American and indigenous communities who all add to the cultural diversity of the region.

Cairns is said to be one of the safest tropical destinations in the world, and is a wonderful environment for study.  It is a fast-growing, but small and friendly city.

There are excellent sporting facilities catering for every interest, including golf courses, indoor sports stadiums, gymnasiums, football fields, tennis courts, basketball and netball courts, ten-pin bowling, swimming pools and cricket.  Shopping, restaurants, clubs and other entertainment facilities are all world class.

Students can experience the unique attractions of this amazing region on their own or as group, visiting tropical rainforest, savannah lands and beautiful beaches.  Activities include swimming, snorkelling and diving on the Great Barrier Reef, white water rafting, canoeing, bungy jumping, horse riding, and many other outdoor activities.

Location

Cairns has an international airport, with direct flights provided by Cathay Pacific, British Airways, JAL, Continental, Air New Zealand, Virgin Atlantic, Jetstar and QANTAS.

The Cairns campus of TNQ TAFE is accessible by public transport (bus), with the bus stopping right outside the campus.  From the centre of the city to the campus will take 15-20 minutes by bus.

Most international students buy or hire bicycles, and a number of bicycle racks are provided in various areas of the campus.  By bicycle from the centre of the city will take approximately 10 minutes.  As Cairns is a small city and very flat, it is easy to move around the city by bicycle.

Why Tropical North Queensland TAFE?

TNQ TAFE is part of the Australia-wide network of Government owned vocational education and training providers.  Cairns is located on the eastern seaboard, with a range of hills behind it.

International students at TNQ TAFE share the Cairns campus with approximately 3,000 students.  Class sizes are small, and learning support (tutorials) are available to assist students with their assignments, essay preparation, etc.  Facilities are first-class.

The Language Centre has been open for over 3 years and usually has 60-80 students enrolled, depending on the time of year.  It is small and friendly - you get to know other students and staff very quickly.

Living expenses and tuition costs in Cairns are considerably less than in capital cities, especially if students ride bicycles instead of catching the bus - Cairns is very flat, making it very easy to move around by bicycle.  Students in share accommodation can spend from AU$120 per week for accommodation, food and transport.
