Courses
General English
Communicative teaching methods and a friendly international environment make learning English at Liverpool School of English a pleasurable and enriching experience. You take a placement test on arrival to assess your ability in English and are then placed in the appropriate class.
General English classes then introduce the main grammatical concepts used in everyday communication such as structure, syntax, vocabulary and pronunciation. The focus is on English for spoken communication, however all skills are taught.
You work to familiarise yourself with colloquial and standard English and how to use it in everyday situations such as in the home, in the bank, whilst shopping, eating out or on the telephone.
International Academic Year
We offer you a year long course which will enable you to learn English quickly and accurately through a variety of courses.
A typical academic programme would consist of the following courses:
12 weeks of General English (Intermediate)
This course is based on improving your English skills. It has an emphasis on building grammar and developing speaking and listening skills to enable you to converse easily in English and develop effective study skills.
12 weeks of General English (Upper Intermediate)
This is a course based on expanding your English knowledge. At this level you will increase your vocabulary and develop writing skills for further academic study. You will also continue to develop speaking and listening skills.
12 weeks of Upper Intermediate General English with IELTS Exam
This is a course based on preparing you for exams or further academic study. As well as listening and speaking skills, there is a focus on academic writing and exam techniques. The aim of the course is to enable you to achieve a grade of between 5.5 and 7.0 in the IELTS exam.
IELTS Exam Preparation
This course is designed for people who want to study at an English speaking Further Education College or University. It will help you to cope with the language demands of studying in English. As well as listening and speaking skills, there is a focus on academic writing and exam techniques to prepare you for the widely recognised IELTS which is accepted by university admissions throughout the world as an indicator of your proficiency in the English language.
You can join the course on any Monday and study for anywhere from 1 to 12 weeks. A minimum of 4 weeks preparation is recommended. We will inform you of the most suitable time to apply for the exam at Liverpool University, which holds IELTS exams every 4 to 5 weeks. Our experienced teachers will help you to perform to your best in the exam.
The course is combined with General English at Upper Intermediate or Advanced level. Homework is set and self study is encouraged.
Cambridge Exam Preparation
We provide preparation for the two most popular Cambridge exams alongside our General English courses. You study techniques for tackling each exam task effectively. There are periodic tests, review sessions and practice exams prior to the actual Cambridge exam.
Independent study is vital for all students wishing to pass exams, and a programme of self study and homework is provided to complement classwork. We have a quiet study area for you to study and a range of self study materials for General English and for Exam preparation.
All tutors teaching Cambridge exams are experienced and trained in the Cambridge syllabus. Teachers have previously taught in many countries around the world.
